Fractures and Dislocations: A Manual of Orthopaedic Trauma
Published in Hardcover by Hospital for Joint Diseases (October, 1994)
Average review score:

the in's and outs of dislocationThis book was fascinating and really gave new depth as to dislocatory problems. Although occasionally going a little too in depth for us less than clever readers, it was still amusing in places. The book was very well illustrated and I particularly enjoyed the chapter about young Josephine and her dislocated pelvis. It isn't Janet and John go to the seaside but it isn't far away. The best thing I've read since Jane Ashers "cooking for beginners"
Alpert's "Fractures and Dislocations"Alpert's paperback is the strongest pocketbook on orthopaedics that I have seen. Both as a general practitioner in the Air Force and as an Emergency Medicine resident at a Ivy League hospital I have used this book to describe fractures to orthopods who nearly always are impressed. Friends who are ortho housestaff recommend and use this book. One of the best

French Quarter Manual: An Architectural Guide to New Orleans Vieux Carre
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Mississippi (Trd) (May, 1997)
Average review score:

French Quarter Manual: An Architectural Guide to New OrleansAs a part-time resident of the Vieux Carre, and one who very reluctantly leaves to return to New York, I keep this book in my New York home to look through when I long for New Orleans. This book, with its elegant balck and white historic photos and its vivid descriptive text, captures the best of the Vieux Carre. In fact, I have had great fun trying to match the historic photos to the contemporary Vieux Carre sites on my visits to the Quarter.
I love this book, it's a wonderful gift to anyone who loves that amazing and magical place known as the Vieux Carre.
A must for preservationists and architectural historiansTender in prose, painstaking in research, passionate in creation. A worthy addition to any architectural library.

Further Along the Road Less Traveled: "Going to Omaha": M. Scott Peck, M.D. Speaks on: The Issue of Death and Meaning
Published in Audio Cassette by Simon & Schuster (Audio) (April, 1989)
Average review score:

Personal ExperienceI came across this audio tape just by chance months after my father died. Listening to it helped me to get through one of life's most difficult times. Dr. Peck brings the reality of death to the meaning of life - a begining and an end. So make the most of the middle. It's a shame this tape is "out of print".
for the first time death did not scare me.though one can not rule out the possibility of the fear that people have of "death" but this book definately makes it seem simple. well i would say that after reading it one has a positive approach towards death, the only thing we need to remember is that we should'nt forget what this book teaches for most of the people forget things after a while. its definately an extraordinary reading.

Galactic Dynamics

Average review score:

Please create an audio adaptation ...To the publisher I would appreciate it if the publisher could produce an audio adaptation of this book. I would love to listen to this while I drive to work and to let my 16 month old son listen to it as a bedtime story. Arnold D Veness
The "Bible" of Galactic DynamicsThis book is a very well-known and widely used reference for students in extragalactic astrophysics and stellar dynamics. A solution manual for the problems would be highly welcomed.

Gardening Success With Difficult Soils: Limestone, Alkaline Clay, and Caliche
Published in Paperback by Taylor Pub (February, 1992)
Average review score:

For hot, dry and high pH soils (Texas Hill Country)Dry limestone based soils such as the Edwards Plateau area of Texas and other places in the southwest, provide a major challenge to gardening which is addessed in this book. In such areas many plants simply will not grow well. Trying to get them to do so is an exercise in frustration and general garden books can lead you far astray. This book is not about how to try to change your soil, high pH soils cannot be effectively acidified. The book is about plants, trees, shrubs and varieties that do well in dry calcarious soil conditions. It will save you a lot of time, money and frustration if you face these conditions. A great book, a gold mine of information.
this is an invaluable book for Central Texas gardenersThis is the most practical, useful, and enjoyable book on gardening that someone in the Texas Hill Country could ever want! It's not as big or comprehensive as the Wasowskis' "Native Texas Plants: Landscaping Region by Region", but that's because it focuses on the challenges of gardening in these "difficult" (nice word!) soils that we live with. Ogden's observations and advice about dealing with our limestone and caliche, and his reality-based recommendations of plants to use and the ones to avoid, gave me hope, encouragement, and new ideas for making this corner of the world a more beautiful place! It's got some great color photos, too.

Gentry's Rio Mayo Plants: The Tropical Deciduous Forest & Environs of Northwest Mexico (Southwest Center Series)
Published in Hardcover by University of Arizona Press (September, 1998)
Average review score:

Hidden treasureI was given the opportunity to catalog Dr. Gentry's herbarium collection at the Desert Botanical Garden in 1987-88. I haven't seen the new edition mentioned here, but read the original work at the time I was cataloging his herbarium specimens. Through it, I was able to share his experience as an explorer in the spirit of John Wesley Powell, someone who knew that the American southwest is best delineated by watersheds, not along false lat/long lines. I met Dr. Gentry a couple of times, and remember the occasions well. Last time I saw him, when I was cataloging his collection, I overheard a conversation between him and a consultant for the Fort McDowell Indian Community. The consultant was asking about desert-adapted crop plants. Dr. Gentry went into great detail describing many desert plants suited to agriculture - tepary beans, jojoba, Lippia (Mexican oregano), agave, chiltepines, gum arabic, etc. I learned a lot just by eavesdropping. The consultant listened, but did not hear the words. He recommended that the Fort McDowell people plant cotton. Not because it was best suited to desert agriculture - far from that. They planted cotton because it needs vast quantities of water. They did not want the best desert-adapted crops. What they wanted, instead, was the best crop for wasting water, so that they could establish valid rights to the water. Worse, I watched them clear off vast acreages of mesquite forests to make room for the water-wasting cotton crop. The Hopi call this koyaanisqatsi. This book should help folks in southwestern north America realize that we have a bounteous resource, if we can only learn to use it.
Excellent reference bookLocated in a transition zone between the Sonoran Desert and the tropics, this region is well known for its biodiversity, thanks to a 1942 study by botanist Howard Scott Gentry. Revision of his classic work began before his death in 1993. For researchers, this is a must-read book. It provides a clear overview of botanical studies of the Rio Mayo, a contemporary view of the vegatation, excerpts from the original text and an annotated list of plants.

Geoffrey Scott and the Berenson Circle: Literary and Aesthetic Life in the Early 20th Century (Studies in British Literature, Vol 34)
Published in Hardcover by Edwin Mellen Press (June, 1998)
Average review score:

Full page review in Times Literary SupplementP.N. Furbank writes that "Richard Dunn's title is well-chosen, for that extraordinary phenomenon 'The Berenson Circle' in Florence, is what gives his attractive book its plot and its meaning....{Dunn who] has access to the I Tatti achives, has told this story very skillfully, and with proper fairness and detachment."
The Library Journal recommends this bookShelley Cox writes in the Library Journal that "Scott played a small but integral part in the British literary scene in the first years of this century. Introduced to the intelligentsia at an early age through his close friendship with the wife of renowned art historian Bernard Berenson, Scott left his most lasting trace as architect and garden designer of the Berensons' Italian villa, but he also published poems and a novel [actually a biography, the hjighly regarded Portrait of Zelide, recently reissued by Turtle Point Press) and began editing the complete papers of James Boswell. Dunn wisely concentrates on Scott's unpublished correspondence. Although Scott was a sad and flawed man, Dunn deftly defines his place and importance within the vibrant literary and artistic milieu of the early 20th Century."

excellent for older elem. studentsOlder children will enjoy reading the story because of the format Mr. Derby used. It'll make history come alive for them and educate them at the same time.
History on line.I found this book to be a fastinating fictional story of Robert Falcon Scott, written in today's language that children understand - the internet.
I have always believed that Mr. Scott deserved a more prominent place in history.
